Brief Background

• 1972 -80 German Teacher, Durban, KZN

• 1980 - 93 Training manager  & Training Director, Plastics Federation of SA

• 1993 - 96 Seconded to Plastics Industry Training Board to develop training scheme for the plastics industry

• 1996 co-facilitated the NQF pilot project Engineering and Manufacturing Processes

• 1997 - 1998 Technical Director Plastics Federation, specifically PPSCI Benchmarking and Workplace Challenge projects

• 1998-present owner/manager of Xasa and facilitating projects for government departments, education and training institutions, Sector Education and Training Authorities

Brief Background

He has a broad and specific background in education, training and the NQF. He has participated in a number of processes, eg:

• As a former NUMSA shop steward, he participated actively in the debates and negotiations which led to the birth of the NQF in the early 1990s.

• As part of the Metal Engineering Industries Education and Training Board career pathing project, he helped a large industry change its approach to education and training.

• He is currently the chair of the Council of the local FET College and has been helping them make a transition into the new skills development environment.

• After the NQF pilot project in 1995/6 he subsequently became Section Manager: Training at Highveld Steel in Witbank, where he was involved in a variety of related functions including a responsibility for employment equity. He was also involved in the implementation of the pilot learnership in that company.

Lesley Nhlapo's home base is in Mpumalanga and Xasa will now actively seek opportunities to develop support and sustain skills development initiatives in the Witbank and Middleburg area. After that we will also aim for projects in the Lowveld area.
