He has a broad and specific background in education, training and the NQF. He has participated in a number of processes, eg:

As a former NUMSA shop steward, he participated actively in the debates and negotiations which led to the birth of the NQF in the early 1990s.

As part of the Metal Engineering Industries Education and Training Board career pathing project, he helped a large industry change its approach to education and training.

He is currently the chair of the Council of the local FET College and has been helping them make a transition into the new skills development environment.

After the NQF pilot project in 1995/6 he subsequently became Section Manager: Training at Highveld Steel in Witbank, where he was involved in a variety of related functions including a responsibility for employment equity. He was also involved in the implementation of the pilot learnership in that company.
