We have received news that the Master Artisan Qualifications have been registered!

It wasn't an entirely smooth process. There was a view that this qualification was misnamed and was really a generic management qualification. So we first had to submit some supplementary information in response to these comments.

If any body is interested in either the comments or the documents please  email me.

Claus Bader has been beavering away developing modules.  Indlela staff visited the Ekurhuleni East College Campuses (http://www.fetcomforum.org.za/site/index.asp) to explore a partnership in terms of offering the modules at a public institution.

The project committee will have to meet shortly.

An updated Submission file Ver 1.1 has been uploaded to the web site.

This version corrects an error in the National Diploma where unit standard 15229 was reflected twice. This has caused minor changes to the credits for this and the level 6 qualifications. These changes are reflected in this latest version.

If you have downloaded the previous version, please replace the qualifications at L5 and L6 and the SGB Process report.

Introduction

The Master Artisan is a well-developed concept in German-speaking countries. The Master Artisan is a qualification which recognises the learning which entitles a qualified artisan to :

  1. Register with a Guild and run his/her own business

  2. Train apprentices

In addition master artisans are seen as the custodians of high quality workmanship and service.

Background to the project

The South African Context

In South Africa there was previously no formal career path for artisans once they had acquired the initial trade qualification. Either they:

  • took on a managerial role via positions such as foreman or supervisor

  • developed their theoretical knowledge via N3 – N6 and combined that with progressively more technical roles

    • in isolated cases they continue via national diplomas (T-courses) and university degrees to become engineers

  • set up their own businesses

The proposed series of master artisan qualification combines aspects of these career options into a fully-fledged qualification pathway, allowing them to perform a variety of roles within industry or in the economy.

What does master artisan mean for the South African context

The term master artisan represents a career path for the people involved in practical & technical occupations. While the development of the Master Artisan qualifications will initially be using the traditional trades as a basis the career path is equally appropriate for a range of other occupations, both traditional occupations as well as new occupations emerging as the result of changing technology.

Master Artisan Project

The Department of Labour is considering transforming the Centre for Trade Testing (Indlela) into a Centre of Excellence for the development of small business. The development of Master Artisans would form a foundation for this transformation.

This purpose of this project is:

  1. to develop a generic qualification framework which can be used as the a basis for developing technology and trade specific qualifications

  2. Pilot the qualifications in a number of selected trades

  3. Develop a curriculum framework and learning programmes for the trades in the pilot

  4. Extend the the process to other trades and occupations, including technical, service-orientated and traditional occupations

This project would require partnerships with other role players and stakeholders including:

  • SETAs

  • Professional bodies

  • SGBs and NSBs

  • providers and further and higher education bodies

  • Government departments, provincially and nationally

Technical support

Technical support is provided by German Technical Co-operation and sister organisations.
